okay i just recieved a GF8800GTS and wondering, my machine isnt that new,

im running a P4 2.8GHz CPU and my PSU is a lame 340W and my current gfx is a GF6600. Question is, if i replace the 6600 >> 8800, will my PSU blow? on the box of the 8800 it says recommended power supply 400W *given its a Pentium Core 2 Extreme QX670*.

any suggestions? a new PSU is so much hassle *sigh* with all the cables unplugging and reconnecting and i want it tonight !! sad.gif

A new PSU isn't that much a hassle. Takes what 5-10 mins to replace. Just need nimble fingers.

Replace the PSU you lazy sod, and enjoy you new gfx card at its best cool2.gif

..yea okay tongue.gif

I'll take the card if you dont want to replace your psu.. for free... lol
quantumAlpha
it won't "blow", it'll just not turn everything on

give it a shot, you might have enough watts to run everything, if not, then get a new PSU
Hasin
dropped it off at the local pc place, $60 for a new one + 40 labour (which is bullshit but what the heck) and they installed the 8800 for me too.

cant wait to finish work now and take it home biggrin.gif

edit: 550W btw

The only thing that happens if the wattage is too low; may be the voltage unexpectedly dropping or swinging!
The power supply will never blow up on it; but you might see all sorts of strange behavior...
I read you did the most clever thing, by not taking any risk and go for a bigger PSU.

yup, the GPU installed and running and tested with Flight Sim X

Man you lazy bastard, you could have done all that yourself!! Typical aussie. tongue.gif

Bah, I have the old, power-hungry 800GTS (the 90nm version) and it's fine. The specs are always over what they really need to be for what a normal person has. They say 400W because some people have 4 HDDs, an OC'd 3.8GHz P4, a powered USB device on every port, and every expansion slot full. That, and because some "400W" units are really only capable of pushing out 250W. tongue.gif

now i see the 9600 is available ohmy.gif

G92 > G94. So worry not.

Yup, the 8800GTS is faster than the 8800GT, which is minisculy faster than the 9600GT.

Both 88GT/88GTS are based on G92, and they are both plenty mcu faster than any G94 chip that'll ever be released, including 9600GT. The next high-end will be based on G92 as well, namely the 9800-series.

oh sweet, i guess i feel a little better tongue.gif *searches for quad core cpu prices*
