Well seeing as how I tried a ton of things to try and fix my friends computer and come to no avail I figure I will have to reinstall XP on his computer but wanted to see if you guys could manage to help me find something to fix it.
Everytime I do ipconfig or ipconfig /all it gives me an error message about: unable to query host name. I tried reseting winsocks and tcp/ip stacks and all of that. I even tried to do the netdiag /test:winsock and it said: failed to get info for a network adapter... I also tried a new Network card, scanned for viruses and spyware, and I tried reinstalling the card both in normal and safe mode. I also tried some Microsoft help things.
Please help

So, what exactly is the problem? Can't connect to internet or just that message being irratating?
Is that computer behind a router or firewall? Did you disable windows firewll if there is another present?

try pinging localhost
Also, what, what can you do? can you see the net? Did you find any viruses/spyware.
You said you have replaced the NIC and the problem persists, so its an issue other than that. Is there another computer in the enviornment?
How is it connected to the internet? Can you hook up another system and get a better response?

It can't connect to the internet at all. There is no firewall or anything.
I can't see the net and I found some viruses but got rid of them same with spyware. It's connected at his house via Bellsouth DSL so I decided to take it home here where I have cable and it still wouldn't work. This is his only computer.

Then it sounds like the system is fucked up. and with a virus, you never know the extent of the damage, so I recommend a wipe.

When did it happen, when did it previously work?
Was software installed then uninstalled prior to this error?

Thanks for the help guys but I got it fixed. I fixed the repair install option to show up and I did a repair install and it fixed everything.
Thanks again
