A while back i was told about routers that can have 2 cable modem inputs which then allows you to use it as one connection ie: 2x20meg connections going in and 1x40meg connection then going to your pc.
Does anyone know where to buy one of these or what i should be googleing for to get them because i can`t find one no matter how much i look around.

Thanks guys

Something like this? http://guru3d.com/article/network/103/ I searched Google for "Dual WAN Router".

Dlink makes one too... http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=452

Hmm... interesting lol....

On second thoughts would i be able to just put a nic card in and then bridge that to the existing nic on my mobo?
Scott
Yup you can smile.gif

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457038.aspx

Pretty much the same applies to Vista as well. But yeah it does work very well.

Actually come to think of it... isn't bridging only used to bridge one connection to another? like one part of your network to another part. I dunno if it would work for load balancing, etc.. might want to look into that one. I think that might be a reason why they sell the routers with the dual wan ports...
Taco Bell
Yes Scott, bridging is indeed to bridge one network connection to another and, unfortunately, it's NOT really gonna do what you're looking for nathan.

However, you're certainly not the first one to make that mistake.
Scott
Yeah. I think this has been brought up a few times actually. Not the routers with 2 WAN ports, but the load balancing idea.

Best bet would be to try out one of those routers. Do you currently have 2 high speed connections coming in? You won't simply be able to plug in someone else's modem, or one that you just picked up off of ebay. Has to have an account and enabled on the network.

Just curious to see this working and how fast it would be haha. smile.gif

It wont be able to "load balance" as such. Because you'll be running off two IP addresses, you have to be running two downloads to utilise both IPs.

Think of it like dual core.. 1 TCP connection cant utilise two lines. I think if you ran something like torrents, you may get a boost, as it connects to many, but for things like FTP, you can only use one connection at a time for that.

Well putting the second nic card in was the straw that broke the camels back. I have a 550w psu and it runs 5hdd`s, 2 dvdrw and a tai-chi case with liquid cooling.
Now it won`t power one of my hdd`s and one of my dvdrw drives. So when i get the 880 Hiper in tomorrow i`ll try again.
I do have 2 20megs connections that are both on account and live but when i tried it yesterday it would tell me that both cards where working properly but it was only local access and not internet so i`m not to sure what to do now..
Is it more likely to work with a dual wan router or if i do use to cards how would i use them independantly so i could DL 2 files at full speed using a dedicated connection for each?

To utilise two nics you would need to set each NIC to be the gateway for different address ranges (I think) so you would use one nic to connect to certain addresses and one for others, as your PC cannot round robin the NIC usage. There might be software out there that can manage this, but I've never had a need for it or seen any.

Are the dual wan routers made for this purpose? I`m willing to buy one but i just want to be 85% sure of it working to warrent spending the @£100 that it`s going to cost me.
dkreifus
Thats a pretty heavy rig..what are you doing on it? If you're trying to run a server, you may want to do it via external device.

amd x2 6000+
4x1 gig 667 corsair
1x 500 seagate
1x 400 seagate
1x 320 western digital
1x 200 seagate
1x 80 western digital
1x sony dvdrw
1x optiarc dvdrw
nvidia en7600gt
tai-chi watercooled case
and extra 3 120mm case fans
Vista ultimate ( why bother!! extras are a ripoff for the money it cost )
love dreamscene but it wasn`t worth buying just for that...

It`s not for a server.
I only work 3 days a week and have to find other things to occupy my time so i just mess with an idea for a while then get bored.
Pc`s and my fish tank are the only thing that keep me sane... lol smile.gif

LOL nice biggrin.gif *thumbs up* It's a great hobby.

yeah I've been researching this a bit http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=452 it seems to do what you want. Has load balancing, etc. I say give that one a try or contact Dlink to see if they have any more info on it. The only problem is finding one in a store, might be a special order. Would be sweet to have though.

One of the main differentiators the DI-LB604 has from most routers is its dual WAN ports. With the ability to connect up to two Internet connections, the total available bandwidth doubles in capacity and therefore provides a tremendous increase in network efficiency and user productivity. Dual WAN ports also provide a fast-acting failover response mechanism; if one Internet connection goes down, the other automatically takes control to ensure continuous network uptime.

Well there it is, it was posted today so i should hopefully have it this side of the weekend but i won`t hold my breath. lol

The only thing is is that even though it takes 2 connections it wont allow you to use them doubled ie: 2x20meg = 40meg.
What it does is allows you to utilise them both by means of switching connections when one is being maxed out.

So if say i was torrenting then when 1 download hits 2.2meg and is being completely utilised than it would allow me to use the other connection and if i wish to i could download at 2.2megs on that one aswell.
However if i do a speed test it will only ever show 1 connection of 20 meg.
I`ll know more when it arrives... smile.gif
nathan
Well for anyone still interested the router turned up and 1 hour later i beat the s*** out of it for being the cheapest pile of c**p ever..... (my own fault for being a cheap ass)

Anyway there`s a piece of software called WINGATE which is a type of firewall and you can set the 2 connections up on 2 nic cards and it will power balance for you, however if you do an online speed test it will show only 20megs and not 40, this is due to the fact that only one ip address will be regestered for the test.

The software will rotate the connections so if i use DAP pro and dl a big file i can hit about 3.7megs per second which is really nice. Now i just need to wait till VM unviel the 50meg connection and see if the pc an handle @10megs per second being written to it whilst still doing other things at the same time. (hmmm wd raptor might be in order i think)

Well there you go, it just shows what looking around the net can do for you instead of just sitting in one place expecting everyone to do all the work for you.

If anyone wants to try this i have the tutorial for wingate to set it up the right way for this type of connection.
Just pm me if you wan it..... biggrin.gif

And once again thanks for the help from you all...... smile.gif
Scott
Cool. (Well not about the router situation). I still would have liked to see what that D-Link router could have done though.. Go buy it and try. K Thx. lol tongue.gif

I'll look into WINGATE, seems promising.

I just bought a WRT150N yesterday to replace my WRT54G. DD-WRT is all up and running on both. Waiting for my N card to get here...
