Full Version: Will this work?

My question is: If I use the WRT150N router as the main router and create a bridge to the WRT54G router. Can the WRT54G router still accept wireless clients or will I be able to use wired connections only? I know I will still be able to connect via wireless to the WRT150N.

Here is a pic of what I'm trying to do:

Beware of complexity for the sake of itself... What exactly are you trying to achieve? A larger coverage area? Or do you want roaming capability between devices?

Out-of-the-box if you go LAN to LAN with the routers all the clients should be able to "see" each other.

If you just want to expand the coverage area, you should just get a WAP so the DHCP servers don't end up conflicting with each other, or at least disable one of them.

Well I'm just bored and want something to do. Just wanted to see if it would work or not before I try and set it up.

It may work, but likely not with out-of-the-box firmware. Check out dd-wrt.com for a nice alternative firmware for the WRT54G. It should allow you to do what you want.

Yeah I know about DD-WRT. It's already loaded on both routers. As for my question I guess I'll just have to try it.. lol

I'll report back with results.

You should be able to turn of DHCP on the 'extender' or just restrict the DHCP addresses on each router. I believe its called WDS, Wireless Distribution Service?

I think DDWRT has that. Maybe tomato as another alternative.

Off topic:
How do you like the WRT150N? I have a WRT54G that has a few hiccups every now and again.
Scott
I haven't tried anything yet. Just woke up.

dkreifus: It seems to work very well so far. I find the stock firmware causes reboots/lockups/disconnects. DD-WRT seems to fix all those issues.

It has double the amount of on board RAM so you can have a few more connections going at once. The N speeds I have not tested. It's DRAFT N obviously and I'm waiting on my wireless express card to get here to try that.

It's just like any other Linksys router that can run DD-WRT though, just it's a lot faster smile.gif.

It should work with the right firmware. Ideally, what you want to do is have a dedicated wireless bridge (no client connections accepted), and then run client connections off other WAPs connected to them, but that's a lot of hardware and money.
