Full Version: [WIN] DVD/CD drives not working correctly under Windows XP

Hi All,

I'm having some issues with a friend of mines computer. It is an eMachine running Windows XP SP1 (I think) and all the bundled crap that comes with it, and the DVD drive just stopped working. In the device manager, it shows up with an exclamation mark next to the drive. The computer detects it during boot and even Windows does, but it is just unusable. I switched the drive out with a CD Rom, to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue, but that was to no avail - the CD drive is acting the same as the DVD drive. I am pretty sure it is a software issue, but is there a way to solve this, without having to reinstall or system restore?

Thanks
Scott
You can try a system restore/xp repair install or even an upgrade to SP2 but this is a well known issue. The fix is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

That usually works.

Thanks for the quick reply, Scott. I didn't realize that this was a well known issue. I will get my friend straightened out tonight.

Thanks again smile.gif

Cool. If it does not work let us know and we can see what else is going on. You may want to try installing the new ASPI drivers for XP if the above does not work.

I used to run into this problem a lot on XP SP1 and below.

It worked! Thanks!

The computer is running Service Pack 2 already, but this fix still worked smile.gif
