Linux is Linux. I repeat as I try to sooth myself.
And finally I can say. Have fun guys.
zapjb, please don't take offense to this as I am only using your comment as an example.
Ok, people listen here. Yes it's Linux, yes it's different. It does not mean it's a bad operating system and that it is so confusing that no one can figure it out. I can tell you I know far from everything in Ubuntu but I am very comfortable using it, almost as much as Windows. The only reason, and well maybe two reasons why people have a problem with it or say it sucks is because of the following:
1. It's not familiar. It's different, new.
2. You cannot run Windows apps. (I know about Wine, etc.) Be realistic, the main programs you need in every day life/business, you cannot use, or they crash when being emulated.
I have installed/re-installed, broke, messed up Ubuntu and other distributions so many times I cannot even count anymore. Really, it's the only way to learn about it. I would have no idea how to use any Linux distro unless I tried it and played with it.
The reason why I love Ubuntu is ease of use. You're not stuck in Terminal all the time and it took me a while to get used to that. Installing programs is simple. You either get a DEB package (much like a DMG on the Mac side of things), or you can find it with "apt-get" or "Synaptic Package Manager" which works excellent. Especially in 7.04+.
For the people who hate it: You have the right to dislike it, obviously, but please do not say that after you have just played with it/installed it for a day or two. You really need to use it for a month or two to get used to everything/multiple installs. I have learned how to compile network card drivers, update kernels, get expresscard slots working, etc. Just from playing around with settings and reading guides on the net.
Missing desktop icons? Do gconf-editor, find the apps folder, then nautilis, then desktop. Check off the icons you want. Little things like this make the Ubuntu experence so much better. Especially after installing the Compiz Fusion Settings Manager along with Emerald. I suggest grabbing the Fusion Tray Icon as well. There's VLC, FireFox/Opera, Thunderbird and so on.
It really is a great OS if you give it some dedication to figure out the small UI things. I just hate the comments about "Linux Sucks." or "It's Linux, what do you expect."
I use Ubuntu all the time and I love it. It works well, I've never had the OS crash, at all, ever. It updates all the time like Windows, and for me, everything "works" fine.
That being said, I installed Mac OS X 10.5.2 last night... I love the OSX86 project lol.
