Not sure why this wasn't posted anywhere, but the new version of Ubuntu has been released.

Those running Windows that want a simple and easy install without messing with partitions can download Wubi and run the install from Windows.

Hey, that looks interesting. Extremely simple, and it keeps it within a image file. I'm going to give that a try. smile.gif

It is really easy. My suggestion, instead of downloading through the Wubi install, is to download the proper torrent .iso file. The servers are getting hit so hard right now that it is going to take an hour to download through Wubi. If you download using torrents, it will take you ten minutes. Place the .iso you downloaded through torrents in the same directory as the Wubi install file, and it will use the .iso for the installation files. Much faster. biggrin.gif

Yeah I reinstalled with the newest ISO, although not using Wubi, just a native install. I love it. Agreed that the servers are getting hit hard. Updating/installing software is slow, just try a few mirrors. smile.gif

Working great!

Thanks for the tips guys I'm definately going to give Wubi a go!
Chugworth
Well Wubi didn't work so well for me. It looked like it was going fine. Ubuntu started and set itself up, and when it finished it rebooted. Now when I choose Ubuntu at startup, I get an error that it can't find the partition.
madTaMsKi
I've had some problems too...it set itself up, re-booted and worked fine last night, but today it won't even start up!

Hmmm...I'll look more into it later methinks
Scott
Yeah Wubi works well... when it works.. lol If you want to experience Ubuntu, then I suggest a native install/dual boot OR VMWare/Virtual PC.

zapjb, please don't take offense to this as I am only using your comment as an example.

Ok, people listen here. Yes it's Linux, yes it's different. It does not mean it's a bad operating system and that it is so confusing that no one can figure it out. I can tell you I know far from everything in Ubuntu but I am very comfortable using it, almost as much as Windows. The only reason, and well maybe two reasons why people have a problem with it or say it sucks is because of the following:

1. It's not familiar. It's different, new.

2. You cannot run Windows apps. (I know about Wine, etc.) Be realistic, the main programs you need in every day life/business, you cannot use, or they crash when being emulated.

I have installed/re-installed, broke, messed up Ubuntu and other distributions so many times I cannot even count anymore. Really, it's the only way to learn about it. I would have no idea how to use any Linux distro unless I tried it and played with it.

The reason why I love Ubuntu is ease of use. You're not stuck in Terminal all the time and it took me a while to get used to that. Installing programs is simple. You either get a DEB package (much like a DMG on the Mac side of things), or you can find it with "apt-get" or "Synaptic Package Manager" which works excellent. Especially in 7.04+.

For the people who hate it: You have the right to dislike it, obviously, but please do not say that after you have just played with it/installed it for a day or two. You really need to use it for a month or two to get used to everything/multiple installs. I have learned how to compile network card drivers, update kernels, get expresscard slots working, etc. Just from playing around with settings and reading guides on the net.

Missing desktop icons? Do gconf-editor, find the apps folder, then nautilis, then desktop. Check off the icons you want. Little things like this make the Ubuntu experence so much better. Especially after installing the Compiz Fusion Settings Manager along with Emerald. I suggest grabbing the Fusion Tray Icon as well. There's VLC, FireFox/Opera, Thunderbird and so on.

It really is a great OS if you give it some dedication to figure out the small UI things. I just hate the comments about "Linux Sucks." or "It's Linux, what do you expect."

I use Ubuntu all the time and I love it. It works well, I've never had the OS crash, at all, ever. It updates all the time like Windows, and for me, everything "works" fine.

That being said, I installed Mac OS X 10.5.2 last night... I love the OSX86 project lol.

I might install ubuntu on my mobile phone, when I get one with a touch screen and 520Mhz ARM cpu. cool2.gif

Yeah, apparently a lot of people are having problems with Wubi. Interestingly enough, install went perfect for me, and I have been running Ubuntu since the day the new version came out. I finally downloaded Windows fonts, so my Firefox fonts look normal now. I need to get my coax out to work on my nforce mobo now. All in all, good experience. smile.gif
Scott
Good to hear. Yeah the fonts package is a must! Too bad the people that were making Automatix for Ubuntu stopped making it. That included all the plugins and codecs and stuff. A good thing to have is the Ubuntu Restricted Extras, Rar, aMSN (supports fast file transfers Pidgin doesn't).

I usually grab all these:

K3b - Burning
DeVeDe - Self Explanatory
Restricted Extras
Microsoft Fonts
Emerald
Compiz Fusion Settings + Tray Icon
Banshee/VLC Audio Player
Open Office 2.4 (inlcuded I believe)
gFTP - FTP Client
Conky - System Monitoring
Deluge - Bit Torrent (Utorrent Like) Works well. (Check their site for the newest Ubuntu DEB).
The GIMP
Phun - Physics game, lol, wastes time smile.gif

Other little things, i'll post if I remeber them.
