Greetings ieX!

As usual, I've got a small problem. I have removed Windows Media Player from my Vista installation, and because of that I cannot enable the feature "Show what I'm listening to" in Windows Live Messenger. And since it's Vista, there's no way (I know of) to download and install WMP11.

So, is it possible to bypass that small annoying "protection" of theirs and force-enable it somehow? I send the info from Winamp.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah man, that's not the problem. The actual problem is when I click "Show what I'm listening to", a dialog appears in WLM that says something like "Windows Media Player 9 or higher is required in order to..."

Thanks though smile.gif

Heh heh heh... Well I hate to say it, but there is a lesson to be learned here about modifying your Windows installation in unsupported ways. Microsoft doesn't provide a way to remove Windows Media Player because some programs depend on it.

If you don't want to use Windows Media Player, then just don't start it and go through its first-time setup wizard. It's not eating any memory when it's not running. Just a couple megs of hard disk space.

I'm not sure if you would be able to modify the install for the XP version of WMP, since it's designed specifically for XP and not Vista. You might be able to copy all the WMP files over from a different Vista computer... but good luck finding all the registry keys. I think the two easiest solutions would be to either reinstall Windows... Or wait for Windows Media Player 12. biggrin.gif

Oh snap, sorry.

The XP install file should work fine on Vista. I just tried running it. Although I already have WMP 11 installed, it still started the install and let me know.

Could give it a go and see what she does.

WMP11 installation for XP started up but told me it had to reboot to revert some changes first. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

@ Chug,
It actually takes about 150MB and I'm a perfectomaniac. If possible, I'll skip every single extra file just for the sake of it. And I can live without it, it's just that damn "show what I'm listening to" shit on WLM that requires it. Which, unfortunately, is required by some apprentices of mine.

I used to be like that, but I learned to not care anymore. If it works, it works. I leave it at that. I found I was wasting too much of my time stripping out shit and worrying about every single "extra" things I never use. I just accepted that it's there and that's that. Do I use WMP, no. I too use WINAMP, but I don't remove WMP... lol.

Yeah, it's a total waste of time, and that's basically crippling the Windows installation. Removing stuff that wasn't intended to be removed could lead to all sorts of errors. Hell, a Windows update could come out that totally crashes Windows. You'd blame Microsoft, when actually the update just required a file that you removed.

I tend to be a Windows perfectionist... or maybe more of a purist. Anything that mods Windows better be Microsoft-supported.

Well, I actually think it's fun to try and get stuff to work and do as much as possible to shrink the sizes and amounts of files. As long as it's not serious business.

The installation successfully failed. So to speak. I clicked install, then "please waited" and poof, gone it was.

Ah whatever I guess, if someone can't find another solution. My apprentices will have to survive without it.
Although there should be some registry key or something...must be...

Maybe something along those lines may help?
