--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was recently given a g4 from my school. I am trying to install a program that was compressed and carries an .sit extension. I tried installing betterZip, Stuffit, etc. For some reason, after installing, the applicaitons will not open. I dragged them to the app. folder, which sort of seemed pointless, and tried again. I restarted the computer and to no avail. The icons are there, but nothing happens when I click on them. I am so confused...and frustrated! Could there be some sort of administration option that prevents me from installing new software, even though I am logged on as the administrator? If so, how do I unlock it?

I am new to Macintosh, so forgive my ignorance. Could someone please help me?

I'm not too good at mac either but .sit is the extension of files compressed by Stuffit.
After you expand the .sit file you should get the program and be able to run it.

Make sure it is an universal binary or a ppc binary. Intel only binaries work only on intel macs.

What kind of program were you trying to use?

The program I am trying to install is called Finale. The problem lies with installing Stuffit, or it's familiar BetterZip. They seem to install, but when I click on their icons they merely flash (as they would normally) but nothing else happens. The program simply fails to open--as a result I can't decompress the .sit files for Finale.

How do I check to see if it is binary, universal binary or otherwise?

Stuffit expander comes as universal binary. It should work on either platforms. What Version of OS X are you using? Have you downloaded the correct Stuffit version for your OS?

I am running os X 10.3.9

I found the problem. My os was a bit too old for the software I was installing. Don't suppose there's a pace where I can upgrade to os 10.4.0, is there? I looked on mac's website, and the page said it had been removed.

Oh, well. At least I discovered the problem.

Thanks for the help, guys! smile.gif

Mac OS X 10.3.X, 10.4.X and 10.5.X are different versions almost like Win 95, 98, etc.

You have to buy OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard)
