Now for the problem, no one in the dept. has training on it. Everyone that knew something about it has left so I have been trying to fiddle around with it trying to get it to work, but without any success.

Can anyone give help me?

30" in HD CRT TV
Dual Tuner Tivo (non-HD)
DVD player
7 yr A/V Receiver (big mounted speakers around the room)
No 'media center' of any kind

I'm looking to add a Media Center to my setup, to have movies I rip. (I own them), or download stuff onto it, browse pics, music, etc.

So I have a budget of about 1500. I am trying to decide on what to do for a new home theater setup. I've never build a HTPC or used WMC, so I'm a bit unsure of its performance. I've heard drastically different things.

My big factors are power, footprint, and WAF. (Wife Acceptance Factor) My wife likes the ease of use of the Tivo. oh, I have a Windows 7 Prem license already for this, so thats a non factor.

So my choices:

Option 1:
New HD DT Tivo (perhaps upgrade hard drive myself if needed) and lifetime subscription for unit. ($400-$600)
New hdmi capable AV Receiver with drastically smaller speakers
Small footprint media center like Dell Zino
Keep DVD player, etc

Option 2:
Buy/build a brand new HTPC (no recycled parts, all new)
New hdmi capable AV Receiver with drastically smaller speakers
Ceton 4 Tuner Cable Card reader ($400)
